About "Where in the World?"
This is a daily geography challenge designed to test your spatial awareness. Every day at UTC midnight, we select 5 random countries from our database of 195 sovereign nations. Your goal is to pinpoint their location on the map as accurately and quickly as possible.
Why Geography Matters
In an era of GPS and digital maps, our mental map of the world often fades. Active recall games like this help strengthen your cognitive map—your brain's internal representation of the world. Understanding where countries are located relative to one another helps contextualize global news, history, and economics.
Tips for Accuracy
- Zoom is your friend: Don't guess from the high-level world view. Zoom in to distinguish between smaller nations, especially in Europe and the Caribbean.
- Look for landmarks: Use coastlines, major lakes, and neighboring borders as reference points before you click.
- Watch the projection: This map uses a standard Web Mercator projection. Remember that countries near the poles (like Greenland or Russia) appear larger than they actually are compared to countries near the equator.
How Scoring Works
We calculate the Geodesic Distance (the shortest path on the curve of the earth) between your click and the mathematical centroid of the target country. 0km means you clicked inside the country's borders. Anything else is the distance you missed by.
